Artist Statement

My portfolio explores the interconnectedness of a community that exists in tandem with its variety of diverse perspectives. People experience a sense of community no matter how different their individual viewpoints may be. Even though everyone has a different perspective, they remain in connection with the people around them, and moreover the way each person manifests that relationship changes with their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences. In my portfolio, this sense of community is displayed through the addition of lines crossing the canvas, each with a different shape, color, and direction; similarly to how every person goes through life differently, each line is unique from the rest. Almost like footprints, the lines show each person’s unique passage through the setting. In each piece I practiced making the color schemes, line opacity, and vantage point different in distinctive ways. Each painting has a unique perspective, whether the viewer is on or off the canvas, as their individuality affects the way they see their surroundings. I continuously experimented with ways to show more insight into the viewer's perspective, about themselves or how they see their community.

The Gardeners, 20x16, Acrylic on Canvas

The gardeners in this piece only see color in plants. Their path through the setting is made of plants, showing how their chief purpose is to bring color to the concrete industrial world around them.

The Adventurer, 14x20, Oil on Canvas

The Old Timers, 12x14, Acrylic on Canvas

In this piece I used a warm color palette to convey a relaxed and warm atmosphere.

The two paths through the setting created by the man and the officer give insight into their personalities: the man being a wild trailblazer and the officer being a dominating rigid enforcer.

The Executives 20x16, Oil on Canvas

In this piece I used mainly color to show how the characters viewed the world around them. As they destroy the environment for personal monetary gain, the paths of those around them are barely perceptible, showing their selfish intentions.

The Lover 18x24, Oil on Canvas

The colors of this piece gives insight into the character's personality - kind, loving, and bright. Warmth in the setting correlates with the character's warm personality.

The Musician, 11x14, Acrylic on Canvas

I left the character unfinished in the middle of a busy, colorful setting to communicate how he feels left behind by his world. However, the color in his saxophone shows how he is able to participate in his community through music.

The Child, 11x14, Acrylic on Canvas

The Icon, 11x14, Oil on Canvas

Through perspective and color palette, I communicated the character's sense of superiority and extravagance.

Through this piece's perspective and color palette, I conveyed the setting in the way a child might see the world: bright, huge, exciting, and full of colorful people.

The Commuter, 12x14, Acrylic on Canvas

I tried to create a whimsical character and how she sees the world around her - dreamy yet isolating - through composition.

The Rocker, 11x14, Oil on Canvas

The personality of this character is conveyed through her own free-flowing pathway created by her music.

The Student, 8x11, Oil on Canvas

The tired but hard-working quality of this character is shown through the color palette and her body language.

The Early Riser

The Early Riser, 16x24, Oil on Canvas

In this piece I wanted to create a calm morning atmosphere with a detailed setting. I tried to make a more sophisticated color palette, with more intricate line crossing.
